What is IP Transaction Processing?

IP or Internet Protocol is part of an overall network architecture that assigns roles and responsibilities for moving information on a network. IP requires that every computer on the network have a unique IP address. When a message is sent from one computer to another over the Internet, it is divided into small components called packets. Each packet contains both the sender's IP address and the receiver's IP address.

IP Overview

Internet Protocol Network (IPN) is used to route POS transactions (authorizations and settlement) through the Internet. The Internet serves as an alternative to "conventional' phone services. The key advantage to the Internet access is the "always-on" support it offers. This means that after the first transaction (session establishment) of the business day, the merchant literally has an open communication line with the authorization system. Each subsequent transaction can be sent down the same connection. This offers fast end-to-end transactions speeds.

Benefits of IP

Leveraging the Power of the Internet to Provide Low-cost, High-speed Access to Payment Services The Internet has revolutionized the way we communicate and gather inforamtion. To date, retailers have only used the Internet for e-commerce and customer information. Today, a service is available that leverages the communication infrastructure of the Internet to provide fast and secure transaction authorization services at an affordable cost.

IPN transaction authorization is as fast as using leased lines. There are significant benefits to retailers that use a broadband connection to safely and quickly process transactions via the Internet.

Speed
(in seconds)
Method Average cost
(per month)
2-4 Internet $30-$50
2-4 Lease Line $500-$1,000
6-8 Satellite $200-$300
10-30 Dial $35-$55

Improved Customer Service

Using broadband, transactions are authorized as quickly as those of a large national retailer with a complex costly network, usually in 2 to 3 seconds. Traditional dial terminals can take anywhere from 20 to 30 seconds to transmit and receive an authorization.

Secure Transactions

SSL is the industry-standard method for protecting web communications. If you have made a "card-not-present" over the Internet, chances are that your transaction was protected using SSL. The SSL security protocol provides data encryption, server authentication, message integrity, and optional client authentication - making the transaction safe and secure.

Reduced Communications Costs

If a retailer installs an Internet connection using broadband technology in their store, they are able to consolidate communications for transaction authorization, computers and other network devices.
